Increasing consumer demand has meant that the paint companies have had to develop paints that are ‘green friendly’. As consumers look more and more towards living in a sustainable environment, paint manufactures and governments are being forced to make radical changes.

Consumers can now buy paints that emit little or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) which are carcinogenic carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily and contribute to indoor air pollution. These paints are more expensive than the traditional paints that have been used in the past, but the cost is not deterring many who want to go ‘green’. After all once painted, it does not have to be done again for quite a number of years.

The newer Eco-paints are more durable, washable and not only that it is found that they are lasting longer than the older products. The lime washes have proven to be very popular and have excellent properties. These paints are water based as opposed to the previous petroleum-based oil solvents.

Go Green With Your Laundry

Did you realize that you can buy green soaps and detergents? I am sure you did.

You may find that using soap does not work too well with the water that is in your area. If you do find this is so, you can soften water with baking soda. If you add ¼ cup baking soda to the rinse cycle your clothes will come out nice and soft as though you have used a commercial softener. You can increase the amount of soda you use up to ½ cup until you are happy with the results. The health benefits of being green in your laundry are huge. Just think about it. You have clothes on your back 24 hrs a day and for 24 hrs a day we have chemicals touching our bodies when we don’t use a green laundry system.

If you are going to switch from detergents to green soaps it would pay to give your machine a wash through with just water and vinegar to clean out all the soap scum that has accumulated over time. This way, your clothes will be going into a scum free machine for their next wash.

Eat Locally

Did you ever wonder how much effort is needed to produce and transport food from a farm to your local chain market? Most of us don’t think about such factors when we are choosing our food from markets shelves. What we care most is the price and expiration date on the products. However transportation of food and other merchandise in general have substantial footprint on Earth’s environment which most people are not fully aware.

Did you know that roughly 25% of all American petroleum is consumed by transportation and production means. The very industrialized farming methods are far more different from methods used 50 years ago. Today most of the work is done by machines in order to cut the expenses involved in hiring people. However, machines are not “fueled” by food and water as people are but by petrol which produces pollution to the air. Not to mention marketing and transportation of food which directly or indirectly consumes tons of petrol.

When we are buying food in our local shops we have to be very responsible for our decisions. We can all decrease our footprints on environment by choosing the right products. In this particular case we should be eating local food which has many benefits not only for ourselves but also on our local community in which we live. To eat locally means simply to support local farmers by buying their products on special markets places. You are certain that the food is fresh and right from the farm because it doesn’t travel thousand of miles from some remote parts of the country. Moreover, farmers don’t waste their effort to packing and preservation of their food.

Eating locally doesn’t always means buying your food from local farmer’s communities. You can always produce your own food at the back of your house. Actually this is the best and safest solution for you because you have complete control what you have eaten even if only part of your food comes from your own resources. However, a little percent of people is able to grown their own food. The reason is simple lack of time, place or strength is enough to prevent majority of us from growing our own vegetables and fruits.

To sum up, eating locally is not some fanatic movement of green peace advocates. It is a movement of reason and logic. By simple listing all advantages and disadvantages of local food you will instantly recognize what is good for you. But as always it needs a little bit time and effort. Being aware of what you put on your plate, you will not only help the environment but also you will be certain that the food you consume serves you well.

Why water is so impotant…

Almost all of us associated water with health and vitality becoming part of a good lifestyle too. No wonder, water is necessary for our proper functionality, it takes part in various important processes within our bodies. We can live weeks without food, but we cannot stand a few days without water.

Recently, there is a lot of news where people somewhere in undeveloped countries struggle with insufficient amount of water to meet basic needs. On the contrary, very often we hear that in Europe or somewhere in America factories polluted fresh and drinkable water supplies. What strikes us most is the recklessness and unawareness of people who take for granted inexhaustibly of water supplies. The water demand is constantly rising. Every year there are more and more people which mean that further generation may struggle with water problems.

As you can guess, it’s very important to use our water wisely. There are several ways to do that. First of all, it’s good to start from our everyday habits. How many times we let the water run while we shave or wash our face, or how many times we dispose various things using our toilet unnecessarily not to mention the money we are losing every year. And I assure you that this is only a tip of an enormous iceberg of reckless activities we do.

You see, we can all help starting from little things we do in our everyday life. What we need is a little bit good will and awareness of what important role water plays in our life.

Do you always turn off and put aside your iron?

Do you keep your hot kettle on the back burners?

Do you secure properly your cooker when you bake something?

Iron is one of the most common reasons of children’s burns. How many times do you leave your hot iron unsecured? Do you think about putting away your iron in a secure place, so that your child will not be able to reach it, when in a hurry, you are ironing your shirt or skirt? And of course, think about your partner? You should always put your iron in the same place after consulting it with your family members. This could save you a lot of trouble.

Do you boil your water for tea or coffee in the morning? You are still heavy with sleep, and your child wants you to focus all attention strictly on him. Sleepy and in a hurry, you put the kettle on, and suddenly the phone is ringing. Your nanny is telling you that she is ill, and that she can’t come to work today. Of course, you focus all your attention on the problem; you think how to solve the difficulty. In the meantime, your child took interest in boiling water because the kettle so nicely whistles… Remember to boil your water on the back burners, so that your child could not reach the kettle.

I have another interesting question. Do you need a vacuum cleaner if you have wooden floors?
Definitely yes!

It’s good to know that fiber cloth or broom doesn’t wipe dust as well as vacuum cleaner. When you are using a vacuum cleaner be sure that you have the proper end designed for wooden floors, so that you will not scratch the surface. Vacuum very carefully wipes the dust from the floor. If you have an allergy, make sure that you have a special filter “HEPA”. You are certain that all allergens stay on the filter. As for fiber mop, it is very helpful when you hire a cleaning service once a week and your family consists of several people. Usually between the cleanings, you don’t have time for vacuuming. Using fiber mop, it will allow you to keep neatness throughout the week until your cleaning service arrives.

How to be green on a budget?

Many of us think that going green is always connected with spending more on ecological products. We often say that only wealthy people can afford expensive products that are harmless for the environment whereas normal people are forced to buy regular products which in many ways are dangerous for their health. It’s not surprise thought, if we compare prices of the organic food to regular ones very often the difference is enormous. Fortunately, being green is not about buying things, it’s about wasting less.

The whole idea of Green movement is about living in harmony with the nature and ourselves. So instead of buying unnecessary products maybe it is better to reduce our expenses or find substitutes which are safer for the environment and our wallets. The key is to find solutions which could reduce the impact we leave on nature.

There are plenty of ways to do it. On the internet you can find enough web sites which offer hints how to go green with a limited budged. What strikes us most is that very often going green is more affordable than we think. By following simple steps and being consistent in what we do, we can save a bundle. And as you know, money doesn’t grow on trees.

How recycling can be friendly for the environment?

The garbage disposal is definitely a serious problem, especially in New York City. Every year we produce more and more garbage which is very hard to decompose. The utilization is becoming more expensive compare to the past. The garbage we produce is far from natural one. In addition, transportation requires trucks which not always are friendly to the environment. Because of that, we should more seriously approach towards garbage disposal and be aware what we put into the bin.

Garbage doesn’t disappear so easily, it needs time. Therefore, in order to make things easy we should recycle our garbage. In many cities recycling became an obligatory duty and New York is not an exception. The main reason for recycling is to reuse materials instead of using new ones. Recently, recycling became a serious issue for many cities. Moreover, private companies also try to be more ecological by using second-hand materials in their products.

By sorting our garbage, we can drastically help to decrease the amount of garbage disposed on landfills. Everything starts in our houses. By correctly sorting materials like glass, paper and plastic we can really make a difference. All these materials could be used again without harming the environment.
Nowadays, recycling became one of the methods used to protect natural resources. Even though, not all materials could be recycled still recycling plays an important role in saving our planet.
