Eat Locally

Did you ever wonder how much effort is needed to produce and transport food from a farm to your local chain market? Most of us don’t think about such factors when we are choosing our food from markets shelves. What we care most is the price and expiration date on the products. However transportation of food and other merchandise in general have substantial footprint on Earth’s environment which most people are not fully aware.

Did you know that roughly 25% of all American petroleum is consumed by transportation and production means. The very industrialized farming methods are far more different from methods used 50 years ago. Today most of the work is done by machines in order to cut the expenses involved in hiring people. However, machines are not “fueled” by food and water as people are but by petrol which produces pollution to the air. Not to mention marketing and transportation of food which directly or indirectly consumes tons of petrol.

When we are buying food in our local shops we have to be very responsible for our decisions. We can all decrease our footprints on environment by choosing the right products. In this particular case we should be eating local food which has many benefits not only for ourselves but also on our local community in which we live. To eat locally means simply to support local farmers by buying their products on special markets places. You are certain that the food is fresh and right from the farm because it doesn’t travel thousand of miles from some remote parts of the country. Moreover, farmers don’t waste their effort to packing and preservation of their food.

Eating locally doesn’t always means buying your food from local farmer’s communities. You can always produce your own food at the back of your house. Actually this is the best and safest solution for you because you have complete control what you have eaten even if only part of your food comes from your own resources. However, a little percent of people is able to grown their own food. The reason is simple lack of time, place or strength is enough to prevent majority of us from growing our own vegetables and fruits.

To sum up, eating locally is not some fanatic movement of green peace advocates. It is a movement of reason and logic. By simple listing all advantages and disadvantages of local food you will instantly recognize what is good for you. But as always it needs a little bit time and effort. Being aware of what you put on your plate, you will not only help the environment but also you will be certain that the food you consume serves you well.

Fiber Mop vs. Vacuum Cleaner…

I have another interesting question. Do you need a vacuum cleaner if you have wooden floors?
Definitely yes!

It’s good to know that fiber cloth or broom doesn’t wipe dust as well as vacuum cleaner. When you are using a vacuum cleaner be sure that you have the proper end designed for wooden floors, so that you will not scratch the surface. Vacuum very carefully wipes the dust from the floor. If you have an allergy, make sure that you have a special filter “HEPA”. You are certain that all allergens stay on the filter. As for fiber mop, it is very helpful when you hire a cleaning service once a week and your family consists of several people. Usually between the cleanings, you don’t have time for vacuuming. Using fiber mop, it will allow you to keep neatness throughout the week until your cleaning service arrives.

How to be green on a budget?

Many of us think that going green is always connected with spending more on ecological products. We often say that only wealthy people can afford expensive products that are harmless for the environment whereas normal people are forced to buy regular products which in many ways are dangerous for their health. It’s not surprise thought, if we compare prices of the organic food to regular ones very often the difference is enormous. Fortunately, being green is not about buying things, it’s about wasting less.

The whole idea of Green movement is about living in harmony with the nature and ourselves. So instead of buying unnecessary products maybe it is better to reduce our expenses or find substitutes which are safer for the environment and our wallets. The key is to find solutions which could reduce the impact we leave on nature.

There are plenty of ways to do it. On the internet you can find enough web sites which offer hints how to go green with a limited budged. What strikes us most is that very often going green is more affordable than we think. By following simple steps and being consistent in what we do, we can save a bundle. And as you know, money doesn’t grow on trees.

Many Believe That Filtered Tap Water Is Better For You

Due to government regulations, municipal drinking water is tested hundreds of times a month whereas the bottled water companies are only tested once a week. By drinking tap water, with a filter if you prefer, you are helping the environment in two ways: spring water is not being depleted, and plastic bottles are not being produced, used and dumped.

Did you realize that up to 40% of bottled water comes from the tap anyway. It really has become an advertisers dream to promote ‘fresh clear spring’ water sold in bottles, but do they tell you about whether the plastic bottles are made with toxic products or not.

If you do buy bottled water, it would be much cheaper to install a water filter just the once than have to buy bottled water on a regular basis.

The health benefits drinking water

One of the major health benefits of drinking water is maintaining body PH balance in order to prevent and cure disease. This is done by flushing toxins out of the body as water is expelled from the body. Without water the toxins sit in the cells and over time the body becomes very ill.

Other benefits are that it gives a clearer skin tone, it improves digestion and did you realize that your eyes also benefit from water intake. With the use of computers it is recommended that regular blinking helps the tear glands moisturize and lubricate the cornea which itself consists of 80% water.

You can see how people of all ages should drink plenty of water each day.

Does Going Green Mean You Need To Change Your Lifestyle?

Often when we are changing things in our lives we think that there is going to be more stress because we will have to be changing our existing habits.

The beauty of going green does not mean that you need to be making dramatic changes to your lifestyle overnight and this makes it so easy to do. Like any change it pays to take small steps to effecting the change and that means that you might just start by doing something as simple as having separate waste bins for your trash. It is such a simple but important step for reducing your carbon footprint.

With your diet it is a good idea if you just work on one area at a time so that the whole process does not become overwhelming. You might for example, decide to look at all the sauces that you use for cooking and putting on your meals. By checking the ingredients of these you will decide to keep some and may decide to make some of your own if you cannot find good alternatives.

Then you might decide to look at your meat and see what improvements you can make in your meat selection or alternatives to meat, and after that your vegetables by going organic, or you may even decide to start growing some of your basic vegetables yourself. If you do decide to grow some of your own you may decide to have your own compost and recycle your food scraps.

Over time all these little steps will have impacted your life quite a lot and you will be getting the beneficial effects of living a green existence.

Pest Sprays Are Dynamite!

You may be using pest sprays and think that you have got the results you wanted. After all, it did kill that pest, didn’t it?

But have you given any serious thought to what that spray has done for you and your family?

Let’s look at the facts:

If you use perfume you spray it on yourself so that you have a nice fine coverage of scent, right? Well, when you spray pest spray you also have a fine coverage on your household effects. Trouble is, it is not so nice!
A fine spray on furniture or bench tops is likely to stay there for some time unless it is wiped of intentionally, or when the house is cleaned.
Do you realize what else happens with the fine spray? It sits in the air for a long time (depending on air flow, it can be for hours)
So what is happening in the meantime? You are inhaling or touching all the chemicals that have killed the pest.

Now that we have thought about how the spray works, did you realize that many of the toxins in pest spray cannot be expelled from the body! That is right. They accumulate in the body for the rest of your life. WOW, that is information that is a bit hard to digest, isn’t it? But it is true.

If we use toxic pest sprays on a regular basis we are slowly storing up killer toxins!

If you are an adult that is one thing, but imagine what it is doing to the toddlers who run around and are always putting their hands in their mouths. And what about their toys that they have lying around that probably got covered in pest spray, as they too will be put in the mouths of the littleness.

Give some serious thought about how to kill pests in your house because you are most definitely harming yourself and your family if you use chemical sprays.
