Recently I decided that I am going to make my own cleaning products for my cleaning service in NYC. I use them at home for my cleaning, so why not use them at my clients’ homes.

I was asked to do a deep cleaning for a new client on the Upper West Side. The project was big because we had to wash the walls from top to bottom. The apartment was in good shape.

I made my own soft scrub.

It was very easy and quick to do. I mixed 1/8 cup of Castile oil plus 1/2 cup of baking soda plus 8 drops of tea tree or rosemary essential oil. It makes enough for a couple of bathroom cleanings.

It worked great and smelled great and there were no toxins in it.

After 9 hours of cleaning I didn’t have a headache , dry eyes or a nosebleed which regular store bought products have given me in the past.

By the way, thank you Kim for using my green cleaning service for deep cleaning your apartment.

I am wondering how many of you are using your own homemade products. If you know some good recipes please share them with me.

There are a lot of old building in NYC which don’t have good ventilation or they don’t have any ventilation at all.

What to do to prevent the mold?

While cleaning your bathroom on a regular basis always wash your tiles with green all purpose cleaner. Every other week use white distilled vinegar to treat your grout. Use a small brush or an old toothbrush would work as well, dip the brush in vinegar then scrub the grout. The most important areas are close to the shower head because it always gets wet.
Cleaning your NYC bathroom on a weekly basis is very important to prevent mold. If you don’t have time to clean on a weekly schedule, hire a green cleaning service to do this for you.

What else can you do in your NYC bathroom to prevent mold?

After taking a shower, make sure to keep your shower curtain closed but leave your bathroom door open. Plastic shower curtains are often missed while cleaning the bathroom but mold grows on them as often as on the grout.
Keep the shower curtain close to dry it faster.
If there is a vent in your NYC bathroom make sure to clean it once a month. The dust will clog them very easily and without ventilation the next thing you will see is mold.

Why is it so important to prevent mold in the bathroom?

Mold is toxic and can cause many illnesses.
To summarize, to prevent mold in your bathroom the keep door open after showering, let the air circulate the room, leave the shower curtain closed and keep the vent clean.
And most importantly hire the green cleaning experts if you don’t have time to clean your apartment by yourself.

Almost all of us associated water with health and vitality becoming part of a good lifestyle too. No wonder, water is necessary for our proper functionality, it takes part in various important processes within our bodies. We can live weeks without food, but we cannot stand a few days without water.

Recently, there is a lot of news where people somewhere in undeveloped countries struggle with insufficient amount of water to meet basic needs. On the contrary, very often we hear that in Europe or somewhere in America factories polluted fresh and drinkable water supplies. What strikes us most is the recklessness and unawareness of people who take for granted inexhaustibly of water supplies. The water demand is constantly rising. Every year there are more and more people which mean that further generation may struggle with water problems.

As you can guess, it’s very important to use our water wisely. There are several ways to do that. First of all, it’s good to start from our everyday habits. How many times we let the water run while we shave or wash our face, or how many times we dispose various things using our toilet unnecessarily not to mention the money we are losing every year. And I assure you that this is only a tip of an enormous iceberg of reckless activities we do.

You see, we can all help starting from little things we do in our everyday life. What we need is a little bit good will and awareness of what important role water plays in our life.

Do you always turn off and put aside your iron?

Do you keep your hot kettle on the back burners?

Do you secure properly your cooker when you bake something?

Iron is one of the most common reasons of children’s burns. How many times do you leave your hot iron unsecured? Do you think about putting away your iron in a secure place, so that your child will not be able to reach it, when in a hurry, you are ironing your shirt or skirt? And of course, think about your partner? You should always put your iron in the same place after consulting it with your family members. This could save you a lot of trouble.

Do you boil your water for tea or coffee in the morning? You are still heavy with sleep, and your child wants you to focus all attention strictly on him. Sleepy and in a hurry, you put the kettle on, and suddenly the phone is ringing. Your nanny is telling you that she is ill, and that she can’t come to work today. Of course, you focus all your attention on the problem; you think how to solve the difficulty. In the meantime, your child took interest in boiling water because the kettle so nicely whistles… Remember to boil your water on the back burners, so that your child could not reach the kettle.

Each of us leaves a trail on this earth which is not always good. As an individual we leave small trace but as a society this trace is enormous.
However, as the king of pop Michael Jackson sang: “If you want to see change in the world look at yourself first”.
It’s good to start from doing little things which, eventually, will become something big.
Seventh Generation one of my favorite companies, which is producing natural cleaning products, is doing more so that we could live in healthier world.
While I am writing this post, more than twelve thousand people support them in their run for Washington. Don’t drag off and join us today.

Many years ago I read how, when you are applying creams from a bottle or tube, you should never put the same finger back on top of the container. When you think about it, that makes so much sense. For example, if you are putting cream on an infected cut it would be really silly to put some antiseptic cream from a tube on the cut with your finger, then in turn put that same finger on the top of the tube again.

The same goes for makeup. Makeup bottles that have a plunger are far better from a health safety factor than an open necked bottle that you may touch with your finger several times or wipe across your hand.

What about using face powder? Have you ever seen people using the same powder puff over and over again? Many people do, more for convenience than anything else, but when you use any applicator like that even once, it should be discarded or at least washed before it is used again.

Keeping aware of these types of cleanliness habits is going to make such a difference to your healthy skin and that of the family.

Green tea is surprisingly the most popular tea drunk worldwide. Those who are concentrating on living healthily would long have been aware of its health benefits. Green tea undergoes less processing that does the black tea and therefore it contains more antioxidants which are good for fighting free radicals.

Generally green tea is drunk by those wishing to improve or maintain a healthy body. Green tea has many properties that have natural healing and health preventative affects.

The major health benefits that are considered with drinking green tea are:

Heart disease – protection from oxidative stress of the heart

Cancer – clinical reports suggest that green tea helps prevent many types of cancers

Type 2 diabetes – studies have shown that our bodies make better use of glucose

Weight loss – boosts the body’s metabolism and helps burn fat

From the University of Maryland Medical Center:

“Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals – damaging compounds in the body that alter cells, tamper with DNA (genetic material) and even cause cell death…… Antioxidants such as polyphenols in green tea can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.”

Interestingly, it is now possible to get green blended coffee as well and it is advertised that 70% more antioxidants are absorbed with this coffee than when you drink most green teas. This is quite interesting as there are a lot of coffee drinkers in the world and most know that the number of cups a day should be minimal. So green coffee I imagine will also become a very popular beverage.
